In addition to its extensive participation in the recycling of paper and board and the use of lighter packaging, the Otor group has always practiced a policy of reducing the impact of its business on the environment.
Otor, which has been committed since the early years of its existence to environmental protection, waste treatment and sustainable development, has now achieved ISO 14001 certification for several of its production sites. Concerned with respecting the environment and preserving the ecosystem, Otor invests heavily in improving its industrial processes through the development of large-scale projects.
Otor is the instigator of an innovative wastewater treatment project at the Doubs paper mill in Novillars. Industrial water is filtered in a lagoon aerated by gravel and aquatic plant roots. Treatment is enhanced by the presence of microorganisms that absorb the organic matter dissolved in the water. This type of rhizosphere treatment station is the first of its kind to be set up in
Another major action, the treatment station run by Otor’s paper mills in Rouen, now benefits from an anaerobic wastewater treatment system. At the cutting edge of technology, this installation has enhanced treatment efficiency to a very large extent. The treatment capacity is equal to that of a town of 440,000 people. Read more...
The Saint-Michel d’Entraygues paper mill has made the investments required to meet the regulations in terms of effluent discharge and thereby reinforce its environmental policy. The new biological treatment station consists of two series-mounted aerobic bioreactors and a microfloatation unit. The system has an excellent level of treatment efficiency. Read more...
A partnership was signed with Veolia in May 2006 to set up a biomass cogeneration and waste recycling unit in 2009. Veolia will produce energy at Otor Papeterie de Rouen paper mills from fibre waste from the mills and wood residue from green waste. Biomass cogeneration will have the twofold advantage of providing a significant percentage of the paper mills’ steam requirements and incinerating slushing waste. With respect to non-fibrous waste, plastics with a high energy potential will be recycled in the form of solid fuel. Also at Saint Etienne du Rouvray, the cogeneration unit set up by Otor offers an output of 100 MWh and provides the paper mill with steam and electricity from natural gas. Thanks to the cogeneration plant, fumes discharged into the atmosphere have been reduced by 70% and SO2 (sulphuric acid) totally eliminated. Otor's paper and board mills all have recent gas-fired boilers. Much less polluting than oil-fire boilers, they have a better output. Read more... Environmental conservation Otor, as the leading world producer of flexographic preprinting, is also active in the field of environmental conservation. All the printing facilities use water-based inks and varnishes only, to avoid the presence of heavy metals that are harmful for the environment. The printing facilities are also equipped with treatment plants for washing water from the printing units. The recovered water is then used in the corrugators during the glue production process. The solid residue from these facilities is converted into bricks for incineration. For further information: Papier-carton et environnement (Source Copacel) |
